How to Put on Cowboy Spurs

!±8± How to Put on Cowboy Spurs

Owning a pair of cowboy spurs, boots and a hat is not enough to qualify you to actually be a cowboy and work the ranch! You need to know how to put on and wear the spurs too.

There is really only one way of putting on a pair of Cowboy Spurs. You can't really get it wrong unless you manage to get them upside down, but even then they will still fit and work - you will just look a little silly. The spur is only made from 2 main pieces. The spur itself and the strap or chain used to fasten it to your boot. The U shaped piece of the spur is called the heel band and the bit that sticks out is the shank or the neck.

1. Start by fitting the U shaped heel band to your boot. The rowel (the round star at the end) should be pointing down if the neck is curved in any direction. The fit can be tight or loose depending on your own preference, but start with the heel band snug against your boot and you can always loosen it after that.

2. Take the spur strap and fasten one end of it to one of the buttons found on each side of the spur. The strap has a single hole at one end and a series of holes at the other.

3. Pass the strap or chain over the top of your boot, over the bridge of your foot and fasten it tightly to the other side. Adjust the strap so that it fits correctly. Not too tight and not too loose.

4. If your spurs have a smaller width strap or heel chain, pass it under the boot, putting it up against the heel and fasten it tightly on the other side. This will keep the spur from slipping.

5. Ride out!
